Down the Rabbit Hole...

I went to see Alice in Wonderland this weekend. It's probably the first movie I've ever been to over opening weekend, and it was TOTALLY worth it. The movie was not at all what I was expecting, though I was not expecting much. I don't know Through the Looking Glass very well, but I've been informed that it didn't really follow the story anyway, but I won't give away anything other than that ;-)

The movie was classic Tim Burton. The visual imagery was amazing, of course. Johnny Depp, not surprisingly, did an amazing job as the Mad Hatter. The only thing that kind of bugged was his lisp, which seemed to fluctuate in and out without any consistency, and the fact that I could see that the gap in his teeth was painted on. But that's hardly his fault, right? Right. The girl that played Alice, Mia Wasikowska, did a good job of portraying Alice as less of a stumbling ditz, and more of a mature young woman torn between pleasing her family and pleasing herself. Gotta appreciate the writing and the actress for that. Of course, Helena Bonham Carter did a fantastic job as the Red Queen, and the graphics department did an excellent job of making her huge head and small body look cohesive through the whole thing.

I tend to get excited about a movie before it comes out, and more often than not I am disappointed in the result. Usually this happens with movies based on books and remakes of classic films. Well, this movie was based on a book, and technically a remake of a classic, but at the same time it was much, much more than the original, and I haven't read the book yet so there's that. All in all, I LOVED IT. I loved it so much, in fact, that I may just go see it again soon!
